Most clients can be supported by online therapy; and this can include a combination of video meetings, phone calls, emails and file sharing.
We currently support people online with lots of conditions including Parkinson’s Disease, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Multiple Sclerosis, Articulation difficulties (including stuttering), Acquired Brain Injuries, Intellectual Disabilities and people post Stroke.
Clients who may have difficulties sitting in front of a computer screen can still be supported through a capacity-building approach. This means we can build up the skills and knowledge of people around the client to be able to provide support in-person.

There are lots of reasons that online therapy is worthwhile including:
Convenience- Access anywhere- on holidays, at school, work, home or while waiting for the kids playing sport!
Save funding not paying for therapists travel time
Shorter wait times- often there is no waiting list and you can start immediately
Flexibility- some clients benefit from multiple shorter appointment times each week rather than longer appointments less often
Training for staff, family and supporters is included and just as effective
Research shows telehealth can achieve the same results as in-person sessions
Save your time travelling to appointments (we also know many people do not drive themselves so it can be a challenge to arrange transport to appointments)
Therapy in everyday places results in better outcomes than therapy in clinical environments
Many communication challenges benefit from intensive therapy and it can be inconvenient to come into a clinic multiple times per week
No!
We are always happy to read over any reports or information you would like to share with us, but you do not need to provide anything.
Clients can self-refer or provide a referral from a doctor, other allied health clinician or supporting person (eg. family, support workers, teacher).
into a clinic multiple times per week
Evidence has shown that online therapy can achieve the same results as in-person therapy and that clients are satisfied with the service.
Evidence is also showing that often online therapy can be more consistent with less disruption to services- which results in better outcomes.
One of the biggest benefits towards therapy being effective online, is that more of your funds are used for direct therapy- no wasted hours with travel time = more direct therapy.
When support and therapy is completed in a person’s usual environment or the environment where the skills are needed (work, school, home, shops) they are more likely to transfer and use the skills they learnt in therapy to these real-world environments. In other words, therapy results in better outcomes if it is done in the community rather than in a clinic.
Whether in person or online, therapy with these clients always involves the supporters around the person.
The best outcomes for people with complex communication are achieved through good teamwork, and the communication partners (like staff, family, friends and teachers) being involved in therapy and taught the strategies to help the client.
Reasons why online therapy could still be right for you:
Some people with complex conditions can take time to build rapport and trust with a new person so not having the Speech Pathologist in their space can be beneficial
People may feel calmer and more confident in their own environments rather than in a clinic environment
It can be easier to have team meetings or multiple supporters attend online sessions by connecting from multiple locations
Recordings of meetings and training can be sent to multiple communication partners thereby reducing overall cost of services
We are all about therapy that suits the person and is tailored to them- if they do not want to sit still that is fine! Let’s go for a walk and talk, set the laptop up at the playground- whatever works
Shorter more frequent sessions may also suit people who may have difficulties with attention – online therapy does not have travel costs so you may be able to have two 30-minute appointments per week rather than one longer appointment (for example).
No need to prepare- as long as you have a device connected to the internet you will be ready to go.
You will be sent a Microsoft Teams link in your email inbox that you can click on at the time of the appointment.
If you want to practice- you can click on the link sent to your email ahead of time.
